5/23/2023 0 Comments Author of long way down![]() ![]() ![]() When Reynolds hesitated, Myers recommended he read a book by his father, the children’s book author Walter Dean Myers, for inspiration. One day, his friend Christopher Myers visited him at the Rag & Bone store he was managing and encouraged him to start writing again. Reynolds settled into a career in retail, and tried three times to get into M.F.A. After graduating from the University of Maryland in 2005, they moved to New York and tried to slip it to security guards at publishing houses, hoping it would wind up in an editor’s hands. He described his first attempts at getting published as straight out of a rapper’s playbook: cut a demo, then “run into a record company or you find Russell Simmons’s limousine and you throw it in the car.” For him, the demo was a book he and his college roommate had self-published. ![]() Reynolds, who grew up in Oxon Hill, Md., just outside Washington, credits his success to “sheer hustling.” It didn’t happen right away. ![]()

![]() ![]() The season was brief and was already drawing to a close by the end of the decade. His success set in motion a kind of unhoped-for rebirth during the 1990s with a proliferation of novels and anthologies of Italian authors, some of which were even issued by renowned publishers. He is perhaps the only writer of science-fiction to attain the status of a professional and to obtain recognition, at least in terms of interest on the part of publishers. Valerio Evangelisti started off on the road to success with the publication of his novel Il mistero dell’inquisitore Eymerich – a work which has gone through ten editions – in installments in Il Venerdì, a weekly supplement of the newspaper La Repubblica. The works of the few respectable writers, scattered over the decades and published with many difficulties, attracted a limited attention and obtained a quasi-clandestine circulation. ![]() With few exceptions, dedicated readers found themselves traversing a desolate, barren land. ![]() If it is true that Italian science fiction was officially born in 1952 when the first issue of Scienza fantastica, avventure nello spazio, tempo e dimensione appeared in the newsstands, then one may deduce, over sixty years later, that the outcome was not a happy one. ![]() 5/22/2023 0 Comments Fairy gifts patricia briggs![]() ![]() The creation of characters in Mercy’s world is indeed Briggs’ strong suit: from the main heroine, Mercy, a typical underdog, through the werewolves: Adam, Bran, Samuel and the rest (and I need to put Ben and Honey here )), to the fae and the vampires, and even to the local police or various federal agents. ![]() The other is that Mercy Thompson series is a successful combination of very good worldbuilding, likeable, intriguing and psychologically believable characters, adventure, romance and a bit of politics. The series about Mercy Thompson is the most popular – and most beloved by fans – of Briggs’ works, and for a couple of reasons. It’s the ninth book in a series that originally was supposed to have only eight installments, and currently is planned to end after ten, but seeing the popularity of Mercy’s adventures it’s rather probable that it will be longer. The newest installment in the Mercy Thompson series, Fire Touched, had hit the shelves mid-March. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() I dream that I could teach at Hogwarts and own a dragon. His book might be understood as a response to the work of scholars such as Nigel Biggar – whose controversial project on the ethics of empire has recently been a point of contention within Oxford University – and Niall Ferguson – who famously feuded with Pankaj Mishra in the London Review of Books over his book Civilization: The West and The Rest. ![]() Although Tharoor definitely isn’t the first to do it, he takes the time to dispel a more colonialist view of history, for which he is due some credit. To be fair to Tharoor, however, I must begin my critique by acknowledging that he did more than simply point out that colonialism is bad he went through the trouble of researching and writing a book on the many ways in which the British exploited India ( An Era of Darkness: The British Empire in India). ![]() 5/21/2023 0 Comments The Rake by Suzanne Enoch![]() ![]() When the Marquis of Ebberling hires him to find a murderess, Nate’s search leads him to the Tantalus Club and Emily Portsman.
